Fear of Public Speaking

The fear of public speaking is the most common phobia ahead of death, spiders, or heights. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that public speaking anxiety, or glossophobia, affects about 40%* of the population. The underlying fear is judgment or negative evaluation by others. Public speaking anxiety is considered a social anxiety disorder.

Public Speaking Confidence

If you are fearful and panicked about having to speak in front of people, even if it is something as small as a work meeting with 5 people, it can become a debilitating problem.

For some people it is only a fear in front of a large group, giving a presentation or a speech. For others it can be more of a social anxiety when talking in a group or with unfamiliar people. These situations feel stressful and overwhelming.

The result of this fear is isolation. When a person feels extreme anxiety because of public speaking or social anxiety, they become more introverted, even if that is not their normal personality. People with social anxiety often use substances like alcohol or marijuana to calm themselves which then makes them feel dependent on a substance to get through social situations.

If you recognize these symptoms, hypnotherapy can help. Using hypnosis, you will relax enough to visualize and imagine yourself feeling calm, and in control, even enjoying public speaking or social situations. If you are ready for a change, call today!
